Nigeria setting pace of stable democracy in Africa  – Analysts
    Democracy
    By Reporters
Bauchi, June 12, 2024 (NAN) Some analysts have said that the 25 years of uninterrupted cilivian administration in Nigeria is laying the foundation of a strong and stable democracy in Africa.
The experts including academics, activists and political actors said this while commenting on the 2024 Demoocracy Day celebration in Bauchi, Dutse and Gombe.
They said that Nigerians have displayed great political acumen and patriotism towards promoting democratic culture in the last 25 years in spite of security, social and economic challenges and the country.
Mr Muhammad Musbahu, the Convener, Friends of Democracy Initiative, a Jigawa-based group, said that Nigeria had achieved a significant milestone in achieving 25-year of uninterrupted democracy.
He said Nigeria was setting a pace of stable democracy in Africa, in view of its political and economic importance in the continent.
Musbahu, however, said the progress mellowed down due to corruption and poor governance at state and local government levels.
“Nigeria is facing corruption, abuse of power and politicisation of everything.
“The country is grappling with poverty, high illiteracy rate, banditry, maternal and child mortality,” he said.
He noted that ensuring effective financial and political autonomy to the legislature, judiciary and local government councils would further entrench democratic governance at the grassroots.
Also commenting, Dr Kabir Abubakar, a lecturer in the Department of Agricultural Economics, Bauchi State University (BASU), Gadau, said that Nigeria recorded succeesses in its economic diversification drive, especially agricultural transformation.
He said the successive administrations under the current democratic dispensation initiated viable agriculture development programmes, to reduce poverty, provide livelihoods, encourage productivity and boost government’s revenue base.
The initiatives, he said, enhanced farmer access to credit facilities, inputs and improved entrepreneurial skills, thus adding value to the produce.
Corroborating Abubakar, a female farmer in Bauchi, Marka Abbas, lauded the federal government’s agricultural interventions, adding that it empowered them and enhance food security.
“Agriculture made positive contributions in building the national economy in spite of the challenges of limited access to markets, climate change, and insecurity,” she said.

Similarly; Gov. Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State said there is no better alternative to democracy as a form of government.

“As Nigeria celebrates its 25th Democracy day, it is a testimony to the fact that democratic governance has not only been firmly rooted but has also come to stay in the country,” he said.

Mohammed reiterated the commitment of his administration to accountability and transparency in governance, pledging that the resources at the government’s disposal would continue to be judiciously used for the common good of the people of the State.

“We will continue to ensure value for money for the projects that would be executed. To this end, the resources we have would be deployed for maximal effect on the socio-economic development of the State.

“We cannot afford to embark on projects that have little or no effect on the wellbeing of the generality of the people of the State,” he said.

The governor noted that the current economic hardship being experienced by Nigerians as a result of the removal of fuel subsidy was receiving the attention of both the federal and state governments.

However, Dr Hassan Langa, a Lecturer, Federal College of Education (Tech), Gombe, said that Nigeria had made retrogressive progress in the last two decades.

He attributed the problem to corruption and lack of respect for the rule of law among the political leadership.

Hassan said that flagrant abuse of constitutional provisions was eroding the quest towards building Nigeria’s nascent democracy.

“In 1999, local government elections were better off, because they were not conducted by the State Independent Electoral Commissions.
“Fir instance, the then governor of Gombe State, was in the APP, and out of 11 LGAs, seven were PDP and the remaining four of the APP, which was the reflection of the desire of the people.
“But today at 25, any governor of any party will always have all the councillors and chairmen won by his party.
“That is the kind of retrogression, it is not better than when we started, and it is supposed to be better than when we started,” he said.
He, however, said the country made progress, especially in the area of higher education, rail and road infrastructure in the last 25 years of civilian administration. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

June 12: Kingibe says fairness, justice critical for equitable society
    Democracy
    By Emmanuel Mogbede
Abuja, June 12,2024(NAN)Amb. Babagana Kingibe, a a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), has said that fairness and justice in governance at all levels is critical to an equatable society and equal opportunities for all.
Kingibe who was Chief MKO Abiola’s running mate in the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election on the then Social Democratic Party (SDP) platform said this at a dinner on Tuesday in Abuja.
The dinner which was organised by the Ministry of Youth Development to celebrate Nigeria’s 25 years of uninterrupted democracy.
The lecture was titled:”25 Years of Enduring Democracy: Prospects for the Future”.
Kingibe recalled that in his days, fairness and justice made it possible for children of the less privileged to obtain scholarships to study with children of the rich in same schools and excelled.
He noted that something however, went wrong when two generations back jettisoned the idea that all was entitled to equal opportunities and started looking after their own rather than opening up space for everybody.
“It was not an issue of godfatherism in my time: I was 36 years of age, when I became a career Ambassador, 40 when I became a Permanent Secretary and 48 when I was leading the SDP.
“The first thing youths of today should fight for is justice, fairness and equal opportunities,” Kingibe  said.
He stressed the need for mentorship if the younger generation must take over the country’s leadership from the older generation.
He noted that mentoring was lacking in the country’s political space as most youths struggle by themselves to find their ways to the top.
He said it was unfortunate that most of the older generation didn’t know when it was time to give way for the younger generation.
“We lost this mentorship, perhaps because we, my generation, decided to sit around government, we didn’t know when it is time to leave.
“I am very surprised, even now, the number of sectogenerians, near octogenarians who are working around with their CVs looking for political appointments, and I just shake my heads.
“It is time for us to rest, let us imitate nature, look at trees, when they come to the end of their lives, they drop seeds and fall to give way for the seeds to grow.
“We should imitate nature and know when to leave the stage,” the 78 years old Kingibe said.
He said the older generation barely understood today’s world because of the advanced changing technological world which they may not be conversant with.
He, however, expressed satisfaction with President Bola Tinubu’s administration for giving youths opportunities in his government.
He said contrary to belief in some quarters, Nigerian youths had the energy and were ready to take over leadership, saying their time was now.
“Your time is now, do not allow any older person to patronise you by saying you are the leaders of tomorrow. See yourselves as leaders of now, ” he said.
He noted that like Tinubu, some older persons had the interest of youths at heart.
“President Tinubu is not a young man, but he has behaved as if he is one of you who got into office. He looked out for you and for your interest.
“And has given you representation and has digitalised governance , not analogue.
“Many may not understand some of the ideas he has and the direction he is going, but if you look ahead, you will see the destination he is in a going to.
“And by GOD’S grace, we will get there, so when you see an elder doing something to help, rally round him and support him and you will be surprised how much sooner we will get there” Kingibe said.
He said there was however need to review the Constitution to make it easy for youths to acquire political power.
He charged youths in government and positions of authority to always work and think for others to make them relevant to the society.
He further changed Nigerians to  work to grow the country’s democracy to maturity and make it better, saying there was no better system.
He noted that the lack of national coalition was one of the things pulling the country backwards, saying we must begin to see ourselves as one to change the narrative.
“Ones we begin to treat each other as brothers and as one people occupying this geopolitical space called Nigeria, we will get to the point when we think of our present and future as one,” Kingibe said.(NAN)

  • House Committee says NAHCON has transformed Muslims pilgrimage

    Operation

    By Salisu Sani-Idris

Madinah (Saudi Arabia), June 12, 2024 (NAN) The House of Representatives Committee on Muslim Pilgrimage says the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has transformed the operations of the pilgrimage this year.

The Chairman of the committee, Alhaji Jafar Mohammed, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Madinah, Saudi Arabia.

He spoke to NAN shortly after members of the committee inspected the Niger and Katsina states pilgrim’s accommodations and feeding arrangements.

‘’We are here to supervise and see what is really happening on ground; regarding the wellbeing of Nigerian pilgrims in Saudi Arabia. To see how secure and protected are they.

‘’And to the glory of God, with what we have seen based on our interactions with the pilgrims, NAHCON is doing very well.”

He, however, said that if the committee observed that “there is something going wrong, it will ensure that the right thing is done through appropriate corrections.

“But in a situation where we have seen progress, we must commend the efforts of the person and organisation that is responsible for this kind of tremendous progress.”

The Chairman said that right from the beginning of the transportation of pilgrims to Saudi Arabia, NAHCON had performed very well.

He also lauded NAHCON efforts for beating the Saudi Arabian 72 hours deadline for entering of pilgrims before the closure of its air space.

“This is a total departure from what we used to see and we have to appreciate the NAHCON under the leadership of Malam Jalal Arabi for that success.”

He called on Nigerian pilgrims to use the hajj period to pray for peace, progress and development of the country.

“We need every pilgrim to put our country first in prayers before any other thing so that we can have peaceful coexistence within ourselves and attain economic prosperity.” (NAN)

  • Shiroro hydro-power station distributes food items to IDPs

Shiroro hydro-power station distributes food items to IDPs

    Food
    By Rita Iliya
Minna June 12, 2024 (NAN) The North-South Power Foundation (NSPF), has distributed food items to Internally Displaced Person (IDPs) in Munya and Shiroro Local Government Areas of Niger.

Mr Hassan Abdullahi, Consultant on Corporate Social Responsibility with NSP, presented the food items to the IDPs on behalf of the company.

The presentation of the items for IDPs in Sarkin-pawa, Chibani and Dangunu was successfully conducted at Dandaudu-Mararaba primary school.

Also, the presentation of the items at Gwada, Kuta and Zumba was done at central primary school.

Abdullahi said the gesture was part of NSP’s corporate social responsibility to enable the people displaced by insecurity from  its host communities to celebrate the upcoming Sallah with relative ease.

He listed the items to include; 200 bags of 25kg rice, 200 bags of 25kg beans, 10 bags of 50kg garri and 80 cartons of Kings vegetable oil.

Others were 80 cartons of King’s red oil, 20 cartons of maggi cubes, 20 cartons of tomato sachet,10 bags of 50kg dangote salt and 5 bags of 50kg dangote sugar.

He called for collective efforts from government at all levels in addressing the plight of the IDPs, lamenting that the sanitary situation in the camps was unhealthy.

Also, Mr Samson Esumeh, Public Relations Officer of NSP, said the food items were emergency intervention due to increased population in IDPs camps recently.

He said NSP had sunk 36 boreholes, rehabilitated schools, constructed primary health centres as well as sponsored the surgery for more than 100 people from the host communities from January to date.

Malam Yusuf Bala, the Coordinator in Kuta IDP camp, who received the items on behalf of the IDPs, said women and children were most affected and the situation in the camp was sympathetic.

He commended NSP for its continuous support and called on government at all levels to intensify efforts to assist the victims of banditry especially with food, shelter and medical care.

Malam Zakari Umaru, Director, Administration in Shiroro, thanked NSP for the gesture, saying the council was challenged with inadequate funds to handle the situation alone.

Ibrahim Rabiu, one of the victims from Bassa, alleged that the terrorist slaughtered more than 30 people on Thursday in four communities, burnt houses and food stuff.

“They slaughtered only men both young and old and spared the women, while on Monday, four of our people that went back to get food for us were all slaughtered.

“All we want is for the government to provide security for us to go back home, we need to go and take care of our farm lands because we have already planted some crops,” he urged. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

  • Poultry farmers blame egg price hike on scarcity, feed cost

    Eggs
    By Mercy Omoike
Lagos, June 12, 2024 (NAN) The Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN) has blamed the consistent hike in egg prices on low production and high cost of feed.
The PAN Lagos state Chairman, Mr Mojeed Iyiola, and other stakeholders in the sector disclosed this in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Lagos.
NAN reports that the price of egg has increased tremendously, making the common source of protein in the past out of the reach of many Nigerians.
NAN also reports that a crate of egg sells between N3,800 and N4,000 from the farm gate and above N4,500 in retail shops and markets against N3,200 to N3,500 it was sold in May.
A tonne of maize currently sells for N800,000 as against N400,000 in January.
Iyiola attributed the persistent hike in the price of eggs to scarcity.
“The reason for the current hike in the price of eggs is that eggs are very scarce now.
“Most farmers have sold off their old layers, and to get new stock is very expensive as the price of a day-old chick is becoming unbearable.
“Farmers able to buy day-old chicks are considered to be well-to-do. Also, a majority of our local farmers have shut down their farms due to the high cost of feed.
“Presently, a kilogramme of maize costs as high as N850 as against N400 to N500 that was being sold for at the beginning of the year.
“The same thing applies to soya and the groundnut cake, the prices have increased astronomically,” the PAN chairman said.
He, however, said that the increase in the cost of eggs is not commensurate to the rate at which the cost of feed materials are increasing.
“In fact most farmers are running at a loss. That is why the only existing farmers are trying to keep the sector running.
“Even if a crate of egg sells at N5,000, the farmers will only be managing to get by.
“We want to liaise with the food hub at Idi-oro, our farmers are complaining that they can no longer afford to sell at a loss.
“We supply eggs at the farm gate at N3,800 per crate and with the same logistics we still sell at N3,800 at the hub. This means we are running at a loss.
“With all these incurred logistics expenses a crate of eggs should be sold for N4,500 at the food hub,” he said.
According to him, the way things are going if things are not controlled, the sector may collapse entirely.
“It seems consuming eggs have become luxury in our diets.
“We have scheduled a meeting with the government to tackle the situation because there is nothing an individual can do on this issue. We need government intervention,” Iyiola added.
Also speaking, Mr Godwin Egbebe, the National Publicity Secretary PAN, attributed the hike in the cost of raw materials to the reason for the rise in egg prices.
“Early this month, a tonne of maize sold for N720,000 but as of today 12 June, 2024, it sells at N800,000. During the former President Buhari’s administration a tonne of maize was sold at N80,000.
“The increment is over 1,000 per cent, so you can see the reasons for the hike in poultry producers.
“The way forward is that government as a matter of urgency should bring in grains in the short term.
“And in the long term, they should ensure that farmers go back to their farms secured.
“Farmers are not producing enough grains because of insecurity. Palliatives cannot solve the problem, it is like a drop in an ocean. It makes little or no impact,” Egbebe said.
He said that in some supermarkets, eggs are being sold for N5,000 and above.
“Everyday we go to buy feeds, the price changes. As we speak, farmers are actually selling at a loss.
“Most farmers are not breaking even, so they are folding up, it is not funny anymore,” he said.
On her part, Mrs Theresa Muyi, a poultry farmer in Alimosho, decried the situation and the helplessness of local farmers to the persistent hike in feed prices.
“Poultry feed has gone up and we now sell a crate of egg from the farm gate between N3,800 and N4,000. The retailers sell from N4,500 and above.
“The price is still unstable because almost every week there is an increase in feed prices.
“Eggs seem to have become luxury to the common man as a piece of egg now sells at N200 and above,” Muyi said. (NAN) www.nannews.ng

The News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) reports that officials of the NGO handed the items to the management of NCS at the headquarters  of the service in Abuja on Tuesday.

Dr Chamberlain Nwanne, Executive Director of GHP said the gesture was part of the NGO’s humanitarian outreaches towards improving the welfare and wellbeing of inmates across Nigeria.

Nwanne, who was represented by Irene Adinye, official of the NGO , said that the donation was geared towards supplementing  the healthcare the Federal Government was  providing  for inmates.

“It is with great pleasure that I and other representatives of Gift Health  Plus join you here  today in our shared commitment to provide quality healthcare to inmates at detention centres in Nigeria.

“ It is said that health is wealth and that  is why we want the inmates to have good healthcare, as we have always be coming here   to give them food, clothes, and other facilities to help them live well.

“Besides, when they leave here, they will   not portray a negative image of the correctional center, so we always want to come back here to assist, to complement  government in boosting their health condition.”

According to her, a poor prison health can contribute adversely to public health with far reaching implications, especially for communicable and chronic diseases.

“During this visit, we are providing thousands of doses of assorted medicines for various diseases, including chronic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes, and we also provide prescription eye glasses and personal hygiene items.

“To help staff do their jobs safely, we are also providing personal protection items like gloves, disposable cover gowns and contactless thermometers,” she said.

The executive director added that GHP understands that basic healthcare was a fundamental human right, and was working in collaboration with the National Human Rights Commission.(NHRC).

Earlier in her remarks, Uzoamaka Ifechi-Fred, Assistant Chief Legal Officer, NHRC, who represented the commission at the event , said it was imperative to ensure that inmates have access to healthcare as humans.

“The National Human Rights Commission protects the rights of every Nigerian, whether you are an inmate you have your fundamental human rights.

“It is important that   the right to health of people who are in detention, in custodial centres  and in other places of deprivation of liberty is protected.

“ Today, in partnership with Give Health Care, we have  done this and  call on all well-meaning Nigerians to also approach the commission  for such partnership to ensure that citizens’ rights are  protected,” she said.

Controller General, Nigerian Correctional Service, Haliru Nababa, commended GHP for the donation of the healthcare items.

Nababa, who was represented by Mohammed Gombe, Assistant Controller General, Public Health, pledged   judicious  use of the items by ensuring that different correctional centres benefit from them.

“This is not our first time Gift Health Plus is donating these items to Nigerian Correctional Service, they are members of this family.

”We are proud of Give Health Plus and we will  continue to be a partner with you and we will make sure that what is donated  today is used judiciously.

“We urge more NGOs  to emulate this as  our population as a nation is increasing daily and that reflects in all areas of our lives as a nation,” he said. (NAN) (nannews.ng)

  • Multilateral development banks to develop approach for measuring climate results

    Climate
Abuja, June 12. 2024 (NAN) The African Development Bank (AfDB) and other Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs) have agreed to develop a common approach for measuring and reporting climate results.

The AfDB, in a statement on its website, said MDBs had reported climate finance volumes, but this had not fully captured the tangible impacts of these interventions.

It said the new agreement aimed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the outcomes of climate investments, enhance learning, and identify areas needing additional support.

“The common approach adopted by MDBs ensures transparency, consistency and comparability across institutions and contributes to global efforts to establish standardised frameworks for assessing climate progress.

“It represents a significant advancement in how climate finance impacts are measured, reported, and utilised to drive effective climate action worldwide,” it said.

The statement said the new framework was structured according to global and country contexts and results from operations and institutional efforts.

It said: “the global and country context level integrates the latest climate science and sets the context for urgent action, referencing global greenhouse gas emissions and the vulnerability of populations to climate risks.

“Results from operations evaluate MDBs’ contributions to equitable, low-carbon, and climate-resilient development by tracking emissions from financing operations for mitigation and identifying beneficiaries of resilience-enhancing interventions.

“While institutional effort monitors the financial resources and technical assistance MDBs use to implement climate interventions.”

According to the statement, the common approach is not a new reporting mechanism but a tool to enhance harmonised reporting on climate outcomes across MDBs and other stakeholders.

It said while MDBs already reported on climate outcomes, this unified approach offered significant benefits, including improved data aggregation, comparability, and learning opportunities.

“MDBs will continue refining this approach, working together to develop a set of common indicators.

“These indicators will track mitigation efforts by monitoring emissions from financing operations and, where possible, measure the beneficiaries of interventions to enhance climate resilience.

“Progress on these developments will be reported at future climate conferences,” it said.

The statement quoted Prof. Anthony Nyong, the Director of Climate Change and Green Growth at the AfDB, as saying  “the milestones achieved are significant.

“This approach allows us to see what we are achieving in the countries we support and where gaps need addressing.

“It will help inform and refine MDBs interventions, ensuring our efforts are as effective and impactful as possible.”

The director said by adopting this unified approach to measure climate results, MDBs were taking a crucial step towards more transparent, accountable, and impactful climate action.

Nyong said the alignment with global climate goals ensured that their interventions delivered meaningful results on the ground.

” The collaborative efforts of MDBs in developing and refining this approach highlight a commitment to continuous improvement and responsiveness to the evolving challenges posed by climate change.

“As MDBs implement this common approach, they will not only enhance their operations but also contribute to the broader international effort to combat climate change,” he said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

In its message on Democracy Day by Mr Alex Kalejaye, the state Publicity Secretary, the party identified with the people over current economic reality and assured of the government’s commitment to sustainable measures.

It explained that the APC- led government was relentlessly committed to ameliorating unfavourable economic reality.

“The current atmosphere in the land will evaporate soon to pave way for stunning prosperity,” the party said.

The party commended the state governor, Mr Lucky Ayedatiwa, for measures so far put in place to sustain the people’s hope for a better tomorrow.

The party identified deployment of school buses to assist parents, revisit of the Owena Dam for potable water, prompt payment of salaries and wages for workers, among others, as indicators of great intention and commitment.

It also assured that the APC-led government would do more in the area of palliatives to support families, adding that this would be sustained until the gains of economic reconstruction continue to manifest.

“We congratulate our members, the good people of Ondo state and indeed, Nigerians on this memorable day.

“We salute the unwavering support of our members, despite challenges and distractions.

“We urge you to continue to be lawful and dutiful, as governments at different levels are working out the best ways to place the country on a desirable economic pedestal,” the party added. (NAN) (www.nannnews.ng)
