    By Lucy Ogalue

Abuja, June 13, 2024 (NAN): Stakeholders say technological innovation, substantial investments, and effective policy frameworks are critical to securing Africa’s sustainable energy future.

The stakeholders spoke at the Africa Gas Innovation Summit (AGIS) 2024, held in Abuja on Thursday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the summit’s theme is “Igniting the Future: Driving Sustainability in Africa’s Energy Landscape through Gas Technology and Innovation”.

Mr Olalekan Ogunleye, the Executive Vice-President Gas, Power and New Energy, NNPC Ltd, represented Kyari.

“There is no doubt that technology and innovation remain key levers for growth and development, as can be seen in the drastic transformation of our industry,” Kyari said.

He elaborated on NNPC’s strategic focus on research and technological advancements, underscoring the establishment of a dedicated entity for research, technology, and innovation (RTI).

He said; “the NNPC’s initiatives have led to significant progress, particularly in seismic mapping and multivariate analysis for evaluating source rock potential.

“Indeed, today, the RTI is the hub of the NNPC due to the great emphasis on research and innovation.

“I am urging the participants to embrace the challenge of providing customised solutions aligned with the priorities of the African energy sector.’’

Kyari expressed NNPC’s commitment to leveraging gas technology and innovation to enhance sustainability in Africa’s energy landscape.

“NNPC is pleased and proud to have this veritable summit join it in its quest to ignite the future and increase sustainability in Africa’s energy landscape,” he said.

Similarly, Madam Amina Benkhadra, the  Director-General of Morocco’s National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines (ONHYM), said there was an urgent need for major investments and innovative technologies to address Africa’s escalating energy demands.

“To unlock Africa’s energy future, we must develop major infrastructure projects and mobilise international investments.

“And the continent has strong potential in driving sustainable growth through gas and renewable energy.”

According to Benkhadra, Africa will require over 100 billion dollars annually in the power sector by 2030, with total investments reaching up to” three trillion dollars by 2050 to satisfy its increasing electricity demand.

The ONHYM director-general said gas remained the backbone of the global energy transition.

She recalled the African Atlantic Project, a strategic gas pipeline initiative that Morocco and Nigeria inaugurated as a key effort towards enhancing energy security and economic integration across West Africa.

Benkhadra then restated the importance of cooperation on the continent to ensure sustainability in Africa’s energy landscape.

“We must develop specific cooperation between African countries and other stakeholders worldwide.

“There is a need for deeper regional cooperation and public-private partnerships to drive investment on the continent.

“Morocco is committed to strengthening energy partnerships across Africa. We are dedicated to increasing and reinforcing our specific cooperation with all the African Sub-Saharan countries, especially in West Africa,” Benkhadra said.

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, represented by his Permanent Secretary, Nicholas Ella, said effective policy frameworks and capacity building were crucial in fostering a thriving African gas sector.

“Our policies must be forward-looking, adaptable, and inclusive. They should address the unique challenges and opportunities of the African context.

“Such policies are essential for promoting transparency, accountability, and the equitable distribution of benefits within the gas sector,’’ he said.

According to the minister, there is a need for a skilled and knowledgeable workforce in the sector.

“Capacity building must be at the forefront of our agenda. This involves investing in education and training programmes, promoting technical and vocational education, and fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional development.

“The role of entrepreneurship and innovation is also underscored, with a call for support for entrepreneurs developing sustainable business models within the gas sector.

“By aligning our policies with global sustainability goals, we can position Africa as a leader in the global transition to a low-carbon economy,” Ekpo said.

The minister lauded the Africa Gas Innovation Summit 2024 as a significant milestone in the journey towards a sustainable energy future.b

” By embracing gas technology and innovation, shaping effective policy frameworks, unlocking financing avenues, nurturing capacity building, and cultivating entrepreneurship, we can ignite the future and drive sustainability in Africa’s energy landscape.’’

The Summit Chairman, Olalekan Ogunleye, said technology and innovation were key to exploring the resources that would enable Africa to transition to gas.

He said: “let us key to this, not just for economic or global trends but for our community and development.

“So our quest should be supported, and we (NNPC and Nigeria) will support every effort Africa makes to ensure we explore this resource.

“Innovation and technology require huge funding, but we can source this by embarking on a short-mid-long term plan.

“And I am optimistic that this summit will provide an opportunity to synergies on how we can explore these resources, and I hope we find direction to this at the end of the day.’’

NAN reports that the two-day summit was attended by government officials, partners, and key stakeholders in the energy sector on the continent. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

  • NAN pledges to deepen partnership with Francophone countries

NAN pledges to deepen partnership with Francophone countries

    Partnership

    By Fortune Abang/Mark Longyen

Abuja, June 13, 2024 (NAN) The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) has pledged to partner with French-speaking countries leveraging the agency’s wide reach.

The Managing Director of the agency, Malam Ali Muhammad Ali, pledged NAN’s partnership in Abuja on Thursday when he received in his office a delegation of francophone countries’ ambassadors in Nigeria, led by their Chairman and Bulgarian Ambassador to Nigeria, Yanko Yordanov.

According to him, such partnerships will enhance media and diplomatic relations between their countries and Nigeria.

Ali noted that NAN has already signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) and that more would be done to deepen relations with other Francophone countries.

“Your team’s visit here is the first of its kind to the agency; it is a pioneering record under your leadership.

“Beyond speaking French, it is important for us as an agency to understand and speak more than one language. It is crucial for some of us in the agency to understand and speak French.

“So we are ready to partner, not just for the language. As a management, I think we will make it a policy now for all the directors to learn French.

“It is in the vanguard of the promotion of democracy, protection of human rights, and universal rights and franchise that we have a sole aim in the agency,” he said.

Ali told the visitors that the agency has also established partnerships with many media and wire service organisations worldwide.

He listed some of them as Reuters, AFP, Russian News Agency, and Xhinua of China.

He added that the agency has plans to revive its operations in French-speaking countries.

“Our reform in the agency is to open some of our offices in French-speaking countries. We have one office in Cote d’Ivoire; we want to send our reporters to places like that and other Francophone places.

“I am sure with the partnership with ambassadors of Francophone countries, it will be a lot easier to project Africa more to the rest of the world.

“NAN is the biggest media organisation on the continent, and we used to have foreign offices across the continent.

“Up to this moment, we are the only resident media organisation from West Africa that is in the United Nations.

“We have offices in New York and Johannesburg. So this is a partnership we dearly welcome. I am positive that through partnership with Francophone countries, we will go places.

“I do not doubt that a new chapter in the history of Francophone countries interfacing with Anglophone, especially Nigeria being the leader, is opened and the group will go places,” Ali said.

Speaking earlier on behalf of his colleagues, Amb. Yordanov explained that the group comprised 25 members, saying that ‘La Francophone’ is mostly associated with the French language.

He said that the idea and mission of the group is to promote democracy, the rule of law, and all the human values protecting the rights of all and contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals, as defined by the United Nations.

“So as you see, a group that is promoting democracy is logically cooperating with the largest democracy in Africa.

“At the same time, we believe that when it comes to democracy, the media is one of the most important indicators we have.

“So we decided to engage with NAN as the largest news agency in Africa and a great partner of many of us bilaterally.

“We will be very grateful if we can explore more opportunities for cooperation,” Yordanov said.

NAN reports that the delegation included the French Charge d’Affairs, Jean-Francois Hasperue; Tunisian Ambassador, Mohsen Antit; Republic of Congo Ambassador, Fernand Ondako.

Others were Republic of Guinea Ambassador, Siaka Cissoko; Ivory Coast’s First Counsellor, Cisse Karim; and Bulgarian Counsellor, Margarita Nikolova. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

    Qualification

    By Muhyideen Jimoh

Abuja, June 13, 2024 (NAN) The President of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) , Ibrahim Gusau says the Federation will take all necessary steps to ensure the Super Eagles qualify for the 2026 World Cup in U.S, Canada and Mexico.

The NFF boss said this on Thursday in Abuja, shortly after a closed-door meeting with the Minister of Sports Development, Sen. John Owan Enoh, to address Nigeria’s  poor results in the qualifiers.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the minister had summoned the NFF leadership and demanded a detailed technical report on Super Eagles’ disastrous start to the World Cup qualifiers.

Nigeria has managed  just three points out of the maximum of 12, and currently sit precariously in fifth position in a group consisting of South Africa, Rwanda, Benin, Lesotho and Zimbabwe.

Gusau, after the meeting with the minister, expressed optimism that all hands would be on deck to get Nigeria back on track in the qualification campaign.

He said the NFF would continue to work closely with the sports ministry and other stakeholders to fashion out a winning template for the Super Eagles.

“It’s a very sad moment for Nigerian football. We cannot run away from that. But all I want to assure is that we are working tirelessly in conjunction with the minister to see that we come out with holistic measures that will change the face of the entire system so that we can move forward.

“Don’t forget, it is still possible and I want to assure you that we are going to fight it to the latter and Nigeria will qualify for the World Cup.

“This is not something I will just say it now but very soon you are going to see major steps that NFF would come out with and by the grace of God, those measures that we are going to take will lead us to qualify for the next World Cup,” he said.

The NFF boss assured that the federation was putting in place holistic measures to overhaul the system and get the Super Eagles soaring again.

“We are looking holistically at the general affairs of the team. And as I said, very soon, Nigerians will see the measures we are going to take.

” Whatever it takes us for us to do, we would do and think outside the box to make sure that everywhere we can see or find any player that is fit to play for Nigeria.

” We’ll try as much as possible to get in touch with them so that at least have a pool of players that will play for this country to help us to qualify for the next World Cup, ”  he said.

Gusau said that the NFF would continue to give Super Eagles head coach, Finidi George ,all the needed support to succeed.

NAN reports that the meeting was attended by other top NFF officials including first Vice-President, Felix Anyansi-Agwu; General Secretary, Mohammed Sanusi; Technical Director, Augustine Eguavoen; Coach Finidi George and Head of International Competitions, Dayo Enebi. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

  • Women with disabilities urge Tinubu to replace Edu with Tejuosho

    Replacement

    By Shedrack Frank

Yenagoa, June 13, 2024 (NAN) South-South Women with Disabilities has appealed to President Bola Tinubu, to appoint Dr. Adenike Tejuosho, as Minister for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.

The Chairperson of the association, Mrs Ada Tari, made the appeal, while addressing newsmen on Thursday in Yenagoa, Bayelsa.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that earlier in the year, the President ordered the suspension of Dr Beta Edu as Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.

NAN also reports that the Disability communities across the country have made the demand for appointment of Tejuosho as Edu’s replacement, at various fora.

Tari said: “As we are all aware, the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation has been vacant, following the suspension of the Minister.

“It is on this point that South-South Women with Disabilities Association is recommending and passionately appealing to the President to appoint one of our mothers, to fill in the vacuum.

“The association has its members across Niger Delta Region, which comprises all the disability clusters of physically challenged, blind, deaf, people affected by leprosy, the spinal cord injury and albinism.

She added: “We have gathered here today in Yenagoa, to appreciate and congratulate President Tinubu on successful one year in office, including his progressive policies of the renewed hope agenda.

“As women with disabilities, we also want to use this opportunity to thank our caring mother of the nation, the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Sen. Remi Tinubu, for her firm support to Mr President.

“We also thank her for the agricultural support she recently extended to women and youths, as well as People With Disabilities across the country”.

Tari noted that people with disabilities are the most vulnerable members of the society and the vacuum in the ministry of humanitarian and poverty alleviation is affecting them negatively.

“We therefore join several other groups and individuals to drum support for Mrs Halimat Adenike Tejuosho who has over the years distinguish herself as a true humanitarian to be appointed as the Minister,” she stressed

Tari reiterated that the absence of a Minister to occupy the particular office, has negatively affected the renewed hope agenda with respect to providing succour to the less privileged.

“Looking at her track record and if given the opportunity, Hajiya Tejuosho, will continue to extend her generosity and passion by upgrading the living standard of PWDs, less privileged and the vulnerable in Nigeria,” she said (NAN)

  • Group trains 100 community farmers on agroecology

Group trains 100 community farmers on agroecology

    Agroecology
    By Olukayode Babalola
Keffi (Nasarawa State) June 13, 2024 (NAN) Health Of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF), a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), says it has trained at least 100 community farmers in 15 states on agroecology.

The group said that the gesture was part of its efforts to encourage farmers to adopt organic farming methods.

The group’s Programme Manager for Communities and Culture, Mr Cadmus Enade, disclosed this to newsmen on the sideline of a one-day agroecology practical training in Keffi Local Government Area of Nasarawa state on Thursday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the theme of the training is, “Solving the food and climate crisis: Practical training on agroecology.”

According to Enade, agroecology is a farming system in line with nature, promotes food sovereignty and sufficiency and safer than Generically Modified Organisms (GMOs) system of farming.

“We have overtime discovered that GMO is harmful to people’s health and wellbeing, the environment, animals and biodiversity around.

“So, this training is for community farmers on how best they can use agroecology practices to enhance their food production and livelihood.

”This is because agroecology is not just a practice but also a scientific way of producing safe food and making it sufficient for farmers.

“It involves using organic produce, organic items that you can find around your environment.

“It also means producing crops without any form of chemical involvement.

”With this, we are encouraging local farming systems,” Enade said.

He further said that the method helps climate change adaptations, adding that, in spite of government’s approval of some genetically modified crops and seeds, the introduction of GMOs had resulted in the increase in ailments and diseases.

“We have also seen biodiversity losses as a result of people using genetically modified seeds in their farms.

“As we speak, we have genetically modified foods in our food shelves in Nigeria today.

“So, we are begging the government to go back to the drawing board and take a closer look at what they introduced into the country, the kind of seeds they approved and gave to farmers to plant,” Enade said.

He urged farmers to come together and put their seeds together in a natural seeds bank that would protect their seed variety.

He said that aside rural farmers from the state, other participants were drawn from Kano, Kwara, Sokoto, Kaduna, Bauchi and Oyo States, among others.

Also speaking in an interview, the National Secretary, All Farmers Association of Nigeria, Dr Yunusa Halidu, described the training as apt and timely

Halidu gave assurance that the knowledge acquired from the training would be cascaded to rural farmers.

“Conventional and traditional way of farming is the way to go.

“It is using local way of farming, preserving your feeds, instead of using chemical fertilisers.

”You can use your local fertiliser, like the cow dungs, poultry dungs and other things that you can use to conserve your environment,” he said.

Also, a representative of Farmers’ Development Union in Kwara, Mrs Funke Ojomu, described the training  as helpful.

Ojomu promised to step down the training to members of the union back in Kwara.

According to her, the practical session exposed the advantages of organic fertiliser over its chemical-based substitutes.

She said that she had resolved to start putting into practice agroecology in her farm. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

“They look at the areas that are doing  great jobs, and they understood that the chairman was doing a lot of things in this area. That was the reason they have been able to embark on this project.

“What the academy has done here is fantastic because you saw how this facility was before and you have also seen it after; so, it speaks for itself,” he said.

The head of service urged the youth to emulate what the academy had done.

According to him, the academy  took up projects and funded them for the benefit of the people of Lagos State.

He said: “I urge youths to join local governments, the state government or at the federal level because together they are the future.

“We need them in the system because we have to handover to somebody,  so that developmental projects that would impact people’s lives can be promoted further.”

In her remarks, Bada commended the academy for the rehabilitation of the health facility for public use.

The chairman said that she knew how dilapidated the facility was, but could not embark on rehabilitation of all the PHCs in the council due to paucity of funds.

“However, they saw it from afar and were able to renovate this project that had been in a dilapidated state.

“I want to tell you that the council did not contribute any money for this laudable facility to be rehabilitated,” she said.

In his address of welcome, the Project Lead Team, Dr Michael Ogunkoya, said that the aim of the academy was to ensure that the PHC could provide high-quality and eco-friendly healthcare services.

He said that the primary health care would set a benchmark for other centres.

Ogunkoya said that economic challenges and high cost of healthcare forced many citizens to pay much, out of their pockets, for healthcare services, leading to inadequate access to quality care.

He said that the project was aimed to bridge the  gaps by providing comprehensive and affordable healthcare services and facilitating large-scale health insurance registration.

Ogunkoya said the state government had made commendable strides in healthcare delivery.

He, however, said that there was  room for improvement.

“By focusing on primary healthcare, we can relieve the pressure on higher-level healthcare facilities and provide immediate and effective care within our communities. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
