  • Age falsification report unfounded, says comptroller-general of customs

    Age

    By Aisha Cole
Lagos, June 14, 2024 (NAN) The Comptroller-General of Customs, Mr Bashir Adeniyi,
on Friday described as unfounded, a report that he falsified his age to remain in public service.

In a statement, Adeniyi said that the report lacked credibility and could be best  described as a junk.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that an online news medium had reported that Adeniyi falsified his age and had spent 43 years in service.

“Common sense dictates that a fitting picture should illustrate such a reported scandal; instead, what appeared to be a plain paper with indiscernible, blurry writings was used to attempt to convince readers.

“The first two paragraphs of the story claimed that official documents were sighted to prove Adeniyi’s culpability,” he said.

The comptroller-general said that  the medium  did not provide screenshots of the official documents it claimed to have obtained.

He added that the medium  contradicted itself in two paragraphs of the exclusive story.

According to Adeniyi  the report claimed in one paragraph that his age falsification has enabled him to remain in service beyond age 60.

“In another, it claimed the documents also revealed that Adeniyi altered his years of service to remain in customs service,” he said.

He added that no tangible evidence was presented in the report to substantiate the claims.

“Neither the document showing age alteration nor the one showing service period extension by the customs boss was attached to the story,” he said.

He said that the report might be aimed at distracting him but he would remain focused  and committed to leading Nigeria Customs Service well. (NAN) www.nannews.ng

  • Blood Donor Day: Haematologist tasks Nigerians on voluntary blood donation

Blood donation exercise at the occasion of World Blood Donor Day at LUTH on Friday in Lagos

    Blood
    By Lilian Okoro
Lagos, June 14, 2024 (NAN) A Consultant Haematologist, Prof. Adedoye Dosunmu, has canvased the need for more Nigerians to cultivate the habit of voluntary blood donation to save lives and enhance access to readily available safe blood.

Dosunmu made the call at a lecture organised by the Department of Haematology and Blood Transfusion, Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) to commemorate ‘2024 World Blood Donor Day’ on Friday in Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the World Blood Donor Day is celebrated annually on June 14, to raise awareness about the need for safe blood and blood products to save lives.

The programme has the theme: Celebrating 20 Years of Giving: Thank You Blood Donors.

Dosunmu, a Guest Speaker at the event, spoke on the significance of the day, calling for more advocacy in Nigeria as most people doid not understand the need for regular blood donation.

According to him, there is an urgent need to orientate Nigerians on the importance of blood donation, especially as voluntary givers, as it saves more lives if blood can easily be accessed by the health institution and patients when needed.

Highlighting the benefits of voluntary blood donation, Dosunmu said that it reduced the risk of cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, stroke, depression and elongates life.

The haematologist explained that regular blood donors had the opportunity of having regular medical checkup, which predisposed the individual to a healthier lifestyle.

He said that an individual could donate blood in three months intervals, which translated to donating blood up to three or four times per year.

“The World Health Organisation explains that blood is an important resource, both for planned treatment and urgent interventions.

“Blood can help patients suffering from life-threatening conditions live longer and with a higher quality of life and supports complex medical and surgical procedures.

“It is also vital for treating the wounded during emergencies of all kinds (natural disasters, accidents, armed conflicts, etc.) and has an essential, life-saving role in maternal and perinatal care.

“Hence, the need for more people to voluntarily donate blood to not only save lives but also help to enhance access to safe and readily available blood,” he said.

Prof. Titi Adeyemo, a Consultant Haematologist from the Department of Haematology and Blood Transfusion, LUTH, said that regular blood donors stood the chance of living five years extra than people who were not regular blood donor.

Adeyemo explained that blood donation kept the bone marrow active, which in turn kept the individual younger.

She decried that Nigeria still heavily relied on family replacement donor, where relatives were forced to donate blood.

Adeyemo, therefore, urged people not to wait for an emergency before they start donating blood.

“So, what we have decided to do this year is to also invite secondary school students so that we start identifying and building them young to be regular future blood donors.

“As soon as they are 18 years of age, let them register with any nearby blood transfusion service and start maintaining healthy lifestyles, be committed to regular blood donation and be saving lives.

“It is very safe for people between 18 and 65 years of age to donate blood three or four times a year.

“Blood donation keeps the bone marrow active and once the bone marrow is active, it keeps the individual younger.

“And some evidence have shown that regular blood donors live five years extra than people who were not regular blood donor; because their bone marrow is continually renewed,” she said.

The Chief Medical Director, LUTH, Prof. Wasiu Adeyemo, said the day aimed to sensitise people on the importance of having safe blood and blood products in the blood bank to assist health institutions save lives.

Represented by the Deputy Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee, LUTH, Dr Babawale Bello, Adeyemo said the hospital partnered with a lot   of organisations, communities and the society at large to encourage voluntary blood donation.

According to him, for every blood donated, a life would have been saved and blood donation creates room for an individual to be tested for physical fitness.

A regular Blood Donor, Mr Olumide Omoge, said it gave him joy to save lives through blood donation.

According to him, donating blood keeps me fit and my body becomes rejuvenated.

NAN reports that secondary school students from different schools across Lagos State were present at the lecture.

He called for synergy between the political class and economic stakeholders, emphasising that the two spheres are not opposites but complementary forces vital for national stability and progress.

” Politics is too important to be left to the politicians and enterprises that define our economic destination are too important to be left to the businessmen alone to develop.”

The Vice-President urged conglomerates to serve as pipelines for the administration’s practical economic vision, departing from cosmetic reforms of the past.

“Collaboration between the public and private sectors is the ingredients of a thriving economy.

” We must engage in open dialogue and share insights and work together to crop solutions that are peculiar to our realities.

” Whether it is tackling unemployment, reducing poverty, or enhancing education and healthcare, our partnership must aspire to drive sustainable development and create a safe future for all Nigerians.

” Our bragging right will not be about having the most unicorns on the continent but also about our entrepreneurial standing with global comparisons,” he said.

Shettima, who commended the Chairman of Heirs Holdings Group, Tony Elumelu for his achievements, described him as an “enigma and a banking colossus whose entrepreneurial exploits have carved a niche in Africa’s economic landscape.”

He also lauded the Heirs Holdings chairman’s visionary leadership and commitment to empowering young African entrepreneurs.

“Tony Elumelu belongs to the class of wealthy men because he generates wealth and opportunities and is a harbinger of great tidings to the Nigerian people.

” For the dreams you have relegated to help build our nation, we offer our deepest gratitude and a promise to continue playing our part to enable the ease of doing business.”

Earlier, Elumelu, reaffirmed the group’s unwavering commitment to the philosophy of Africapitalism and empowering young entrepreneurs across the continent.

Elumelu, whose business empire spans 24 countries, noted that the annual gathering serves as a platform to review achievements, business practices, and learn from the experiences of over 100 board members.

“Today, we started our Annual General Meeting, and it will continue until Saturday.

” Sessions like this afford us the opportunity to reflect on everything we have done within the year, look at things we should have done better, learn from our past mistakes, and re-strategize on how to accomplish our purpose,” he said

Elumelu added that, at the core of Heirs Holdings’ ethos, was the belief that the private sector must play a leading role in Africa’s development, a philosophy he described as “Africapitalism.”

He stressed the group’s focus on human impact, citing the empowerment of 20,000 young African entrepreneurs with non-refundable seed capital of 5,000 dollars each as their most significant recent achievement.

Elumelu expressed confidence that the collective efforts of the holdings and other business groups would contribute to transforming the African continent and uplifting the black race globally.

The Founding Trustee of the Tony Elumelu Foundation and Chairperson of Avon Healthcare Ltd, Dr Awele Elumelu, described Vice-President Shettima as an exemplary leader committed to public service and nation-building.

” In Heirs Holdings Group, one of our core values is excellence, and our guest speaker embodies excellence,” she said, adding that the group felt honoured by VP Shettima’s presence.” (NAN)

    Cholera

    By Abigael Joshua

Abuja, June 14, 2024 (NAN) The National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA) has called on the general public to exercise caution over the recent cholera outbreak in some states across Nigeria.

Mrs Gloria Ogbaki, Head Information and Communications, NBMA, in a statement on Friday in Abuja, quoted Dr Agnes Asagbra, Director- General, NBMA, as saying there was need for carefulness.

“Asagbra said Nigerians must exercise caution as Nigeria records 30 deaths and 1,141 suspected cases from the disease.

“As we approach the festive period of the Salah celebrations, it is of utmost importance that we collectively prioritise the health and safety of our communities.

“Cholera, a highly contagious bacterial infection caused by the ingestion of contaminated food or water, has been reported in Bayelsa, Zamfara, Abia, Cross River, Bauchi, Delta, Katsina, Imo, Nasarawa, and Lagos States.’’

Asagbra said NBMA, in collaboration with health authorities, was actively monitoring the situation and implementing measures to contain the spread of the disease.

She also called on Nigerians to imbibe various hygiene practices such as boiling drinking water or using certified water purification methods.

According to her, there is need to wash hands thoroughly with soap and water, especially before eating or preparing food.

The director-general also urged Nigerians to always wash hands with soap and water after using the toilet, cook food thoroughly and consume it while it was hot.

Varsity Don urges African leaders to prioritize welfare of citizens

    Welfare

    By Nefishetu Yakubu

Benin, June, 14,2024(NAN) A University Don, Prof. Steve Iyayi, on Friday called on African leaders to prioritize the welfare of their citizens to avoid repeated military interventions as recently witnessed in the continent.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that, Iyayi is a Professor of Public Administration and Dean of Social and Management Sciences,WellSpring University, Benin.

Iyayi made the call while delivery the 2nd Inaugural Lecture of the WellSpring University, Benin, with the topic, Imperative of Human Centric Governance In Sustaining Democracy in Africa: AN Insight in Niger Republic.

He said that several decades after gaining independence, African countries were still grappling with problems of true democratic practice beyond its mere claim.

He noted that indicators of democracy like the rule of law,  free and fair elections and people’s participation in state affairs were hardly present in most African countries.

He said that the relevant institutions that supported impactful governance were also weak, adding that it had failed to raise the people’s standard of living.

” This has significantly added to the explanations for the rather unending military interventions in most African democracies, ” he said.

He disclosed that on the average, African ranked among the top regions of the world that had experienced military coups and overthrow of constitutionally elected governments.

“Out of 54 countries in African continent, 45 have had at least one coup attempt since 1950. The total number of coups by the year 2011 was 214, with 106 of the coups being successful.

” Since then, there have been additional seven coups, all successful thereby bringing the total to 221 coups, ” he said.

According to him, democratic governance has remained generally unstable in African occasioned by mask of welfare for the people.

He noted that the current situation  in Niger Republic was a reflection of the happenings in other countries in the continent with minor variations where they exist at all.

He said that democratic governance had, therefore, not really addressed the needs of the society and the people in African region.

Iyayi said the welfare of the people should be prioritized and necessary environment created for them to participate in the affairs of their country.

He said that there was an urgent need to reduce the cost of governance in Africa because the costs were adversely affecting the welfare of the people.

According to him, African leaders should evolve workable strategies to fight and reduce poverty in all forms to a tolerable level.

, The Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Isaac Ajayi commended Iyayi for the robust lecture which had provided insight into Africa’s problems and proffered solutions to them.

Ajayi urged him not to relent in his research efforts and academic pursuit because the education sector would always need researchers like him. (NAN)

  • Sallah: LASPA urges event organisers to prioritise safe parking

    Parking
    By Chiazo Ogbolu
Lagos, June 14, 2024 (NAN) The Lagos State Parking Authority (LASPA) has called on event organisers to prioritise safe parking during the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations and beyond.
The General Manager of LASPA, Mrs Adebisi Adelabu, made the appeal in a statement on Friday in Lagos.
Adelabu emphasised the importance of proactive parking to mitigate the potential hazards associated with increased event attendance during this festive period.
“With the Eid festivities fast approaching, we anticipate a surge in events across Lagos, which will translate to increased demand for parking spaces.
“It is imperative that event-goers prioritise and pre-plan their parking arrangements to prevent haphazard parking, which can impede traffic flow and jeopardise public safety.
“Let us come together to create a joyful and safe festive atmosphere, devoid of frustration and danger,” she said.
Adelabu also underscored the necessity for strict adherence to parking regulations to ensure smooth traffic flow throughout the Sallah celebrations.
“We must avoid blocking driveways or parking in unauthorised areas.
“Non-compliance not only disrupts the joyous spirit of the season but also poses risks to the safety and convenience of fellow road users,” she said.
She cautioned against converting sections of major roads into makeshift parking lots for events without proper authorisation and provision of parking marshals to oversee parking arrangements.
Adelabu also encouraged event centres requiring parking assistance to liaise with LASPA.
“We stand ready to assist event organisers by connecting them with nearby facilities that have available parking spaces and providing trained parking marshals,” she said.

  • EFCC, FBI strengthen partnership on fight against crimes

    Collaboration
    By Isaac Aregbesola
Abuja, June 15, 2024 (NAN) The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) have strengthened their partnership towards tackling the old and emerging crimes that are of mutual interests to Nigeria and the United States. .
FBI’s Director, Christopher Wray, said this on Friday when he led a team of the Bureau’s top officials on a visit to the EFCC’s Executive Chairman, Mr Ola Olukoyede in Abuja.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the two agencies have strengthened their partnership on a renewed strategic alliance against crimes.
Wray, in his remarks, expressed delight at the bond that had existed over the years between the EFCC and FBI and called for upscaling in the face of common crime threats that confront Nigeria and the U.S.
“Thank you for your hospitality and in particular, for the partnership that exists between the FBI and the EFCC across a wide range of threats that we face together.
”We have had a relationship over the years and this is a reflection of how stronger than ever we are looking forward to taking our partnership to higher and higher levels in tackling threats that affect the people of Nigeria and the people of the United States.
”We have had close partnerships in shared values and focus and I want to say thank you for the wonderful partnership,” he said.
Responding, Olukoyede appreciated the FBI  for being the EFCC’s personnel and institutional capacity building benefactor over the years and expressed optimism that the collaboration between the two agencies  would be taken a notch higher.
“We value the partnership between the EFCC and FBI. Over the years, this partnership has existed and it is for mutual benefits.
”We have to acknowledge that we have benefitted from your manpower and capacity development programmes, which have added value to the capacity of our operatives and our Academy.
”We also want to thank you for the technical support that you have provided over the years for the EFCC and by extension, Nigeria,” he said.
Olukoyede requested that the collaboration and strategic partnership between two agencies should be strengthened in mutual interest of Nigeria and the US, especially as criminality has become borderless.
“Some of the crimes we fight are borderless crimes, so it is extremely important for law enforcement agencies across the world to come together to collaborate.
”Law enforcement agencies must collaborate more. Our activities must be borderless so that we will be able to challenge the activities of the bad guys,” he said.
He assured Wray and his team of the Commission’s commitment to collaboration with the American agency.
Olukoyede noted that achieving the shift in paradigm in the operations of the commission called for new dynamism and mechanisms in the tools of the anti-corruption fight.
“The major thrust is to use the instrument of prevention to tackle corruption in the country.
”The EFCC has done well over the years in the areas of investigation and prosecution, but upon my assumption of office, I decided to look at the sources and causes of these problems.
”We will not just enforce but also look at prevention, since it is also within our mandate. So, we decided to set up a new department, called Fraud Risk Assessment and Control,” he said.
He expressed optimism that contract and procurement fraud would soon be a thing of the past.
According to him, the commission is going to ensure e-procurement in the entire nation so that it would be easy to track the execution of projects.
“That is one of the key innovations we have brought into our activities and we are really going to follow it through.”
