    By Fabian Ekeruche
Lagos, June 16, 2024 (NAN) The Human and Environmental Development Agenda (HEDA Resource Centre) in partnership with the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has conducted training for over 500 farmers and extension workers in 10 states on seasonal climate predictions.
This is contained in a statement by Mr Sulaimon Arigbabu, the Executive Secretary of HEDA, on Sunday in Lagos.
Arigbabu said the training extended to the staff of the Agricultural Development Programmes (ADP) was supported by Oxfam through the African Activists for Climate Justice (AACJ) project.
Arigbabu said the primary objective of the workshop was to equip small-scale farmers, extension workers, and ADP staff with crucial information for the upcoming farming season.
He added that participants were trained on utilising downscaled Seasonal Climate Predictions and Crop Weather Calendars.
“We are thrilled to work with NiMet and our partner Oxfam under the AACJ project to deliver this critical training.
“We have engaged participants from all local governments across the 10 states to ensure widespread dissemination of this valuable information.
“Significantly, the growing seasons for each state are as follows: Nasarawa: April 30 – October 27 (203 days); Kwara: April 30 – October 25 (180 days); Oyo: April 10 – November 29 (231 days); Benue: April 24 – November 1 (189 days); Osun: April 10 – November 30 (233 days).
“The predicted growing season in Niger state is from May 9 to November 8 (184 days); Ogun state is March 31 to December 1 (249 days); for Plateau, it is from May 19 – November 9 (186 days); Adamawa state’s length of the growing season is from April 21 – November 1 (193 days); and for Ekiti state, it is between April 13 and November 27 (227 days),” Arigbabu said.
He said that providing access to climate predictions and crop weather calendars would improve agricultural practices and enhance the well-being of farming communities across the country.
According to him, the training organised by HEDA and NiMet, reflect a longstanding collaboration aimed at ensuring farmers have access to NiMet’s seasonal climate predictions and crop weather calendars.
He added that the initiative would strengthen the agricultural sector and support farming communities through improved climate prediction and planning resources.
He said the training held in Kwara, Oyo, Ogun, Benue, Adamawa, Plateau, Nasarawa, Niger, Ekiti, and Osun states – provided essential training on climate predictions and crop weather calendars to over 500 participants. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

  • Uwaleke tasks FG on more strategies against food inflation

    Food
    By Chinyere Joel-Nwokeoma
Lagos, June 16, 2024 (NAN) Prof. Uche Uwaleke, the President of Capital Market Academics of Nigeria, has advised the Federal Government to initiate more  strategies to tackle  rising food inflation.

Uwaleke gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Lagos.

He  reacted to the May inflation figure.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), Nigeria’s headline inflation rate increased to 33.95 per cent in May.

The NBS made  this known in its Consumer Price Index  and Inflation Report for May, which was released on Saturday.

The figure is 0.26 per cent points higher than the 33.69 per cent recorded in April.

The NBS  said  that on a year-on-year basis, the headline inflation rate in May 2024 was 11.54 per cent higher than that of May 2023 which was 22.41 per cent.

The report said the food inflation rate in May 2024 increased to 40.66 per cent on a year-on-year basis, which was 15.84 per cent higher than 24.82 per cent recorded in May 2023.

The NBS said that in May 2024, food inflation on a year-on-year basis was highest in Kogi, with 46.32 per cent, followed by  Ekiti with 44.94 per cent.

Uwaleke said that the Federal Government should devise more effective strategies to combat banditry and kidnapping to tackle  inflation.

He added that the government should hasten repair of  public refineries as well as scale up the number of compressed natural gas buses being introduced to ease  transport.

“I have always maintained that, to deal with the rising food inflation, the fiscal authority has a lot of roles to play.

“This is because the major causative factors such as insecurity in the food-belt regions, transport and logistics challenges,  as well as epileptic power supply and high cost of fuel, are all outside the control of the Central Bank of Nigeria,” he said.

Uwaleke said that Nigeria’s economy was being challenged by a cost-push inflation emanating from high transport and energy costs,  as well as insecurity, among other issues.

He said that  insecurity aggravated the situation through food supply shortages.

On the Kogi food inflation figure, Uwaleke attributed it to bad roads which, he said, made it difficult for farmers to convey food items from their farms.

“I understand the rural roads in Kogi are not in good condition; so, farmers have difficulty conveying food items from their farms. Insecurity is also a cause.

“Kogi (especially Lokoja) serves as a transit route for many travellers from the North to the South and vice versa, who normally stop over to eat and make purchases before proceeding on their journeys.

“This tends to push up prices of commodities in Kogi.

“Even in terms of headline inflation, Kogi has always recorded the highest except for last month when it was second highest after Bauchi,” Uwaleke said. (NAN)

  • Residents send SOS to LASG over poor drainage, flooding

A road in Oko filling situated around LASU-Isheri road flooded with water.

    Flood
    By Henry Oladele
Lagos, June 16, 2024 (NAN) Residents of Akowonjo in the Alimosho Local Government Area have lamented the poor drainage system and flooding in the area anytime it rains.
They called on the Lagos State Government (LASG) to save them from the consequences of the poor drainage system and flooding with the frequent rainfall in the state.
The residents spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in separate interviews in Lagos.
They lamented that the road was always flooded whenever it rained, thereby causing havoc which was worrisome to both residents and road users.
A resident who lives around Vulcanizer, Akowonjo area of Lagos, Mr Kikachukwu Chukwuji, said the area was always flooded whenever there was a heavy rainfall.
Chukwuji said that the flood always affected every resident in the area, adding that movement was difficult during the rainy period.
“From my street to the bus stop is always a problem, it gets more uncomfortable if it is during the working days.
“We have resorted to buying rain boots to ply the road anytime there is a heavy rainfall because the drainage in this part of the area was not well constructed.
“Most times, whenever there is a heavy rainfall, the flood also causes traffic and not only that, some cars also get faulty due to flooding.
“Especially if it is a Monday, fares also become more expensive than the usual because commercial buses always take advantage of the situation,” he said.
He called on the government to find a lasting solution to the menace as the community was tired of the situation.
Another resident of the area, Mr Abdulrasheed Dauda, told NAN that the government should act fact by addressing the flooding affecting the vicinity.
“We cannot just experience any form of rainfall without flooding taking all over the road.
“We also understand that the drainage is also filled with waste that people indiscriminately throw into it thereby causing serious blockage that does not allow water to pass through.
“This is where we need the government to wade in by a form of prosecution or enforcement on anyone seen throwing waste into the drainage system,” he said.
Another resident of Alhaji Idowu community in Akowonjo, Mr Ismail Muftau, attributed the flooding in the area to block drainage.
Muftau said the blockage affects the flow of water when rain falls, adding that efforts to address the situation had been futile.
“Plastics and some particles have blocked the water channels and affected residents and shop owners from entering their house and shops,” he said.
He called on the government to help them in ensuring the drainage is free from blockage.
Temitope Ajayi, who lives around the LASU-Isheri road, told NAN that during the rains, the situation is worsened as floods take over the community.
Ajayi said water from the drainage in this area can cause an outbreak of disease.
“We are at the mercy of mosquitoes. When they constructed this road, nothing like this happened, but look at our road now, everywhere is flooded.
“When it rains, we are in big trouble.
Due to the flooding problem, residents have difficulty accessing their houses and shops,” she said.
A resident, Ayodeji Atanda, who also resides around LASU-Isheri road, lamented in the way the area was always flooded whenever there was a rainfall.
He said that immediately after Odo Eran towards Alimosho General Hospital, a section of the road is always flooded whenever it rained.
“We call on the government to find a lasting solution to that area as that particular place has always been like that in a long time.
“It is always worrisome whenever rain falls, it affects everybody which is not also good for the health.
“The flood is mixed with all sort of things and anyone with a wound walking in it can get an inflection,” he said.
NAN reports that areas like Gowon Estate, Water Street in the Paco area, Ipaja and some other communities around Alimosho are not left out in the flood. (NAN)

  • Why FBI Director Gray’s visit to Nigeria matters

Why FBI Director Gray’s visit to Nigeria matters

By Kayode Adebiyi, News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)
Contrary to the narrative of John Grisham’s fictional thriller, The Racketeer, this was a real-life, long-overdue gesture of genuine friendship and partnership, a testament to the shared interest in combating trans-border crimes that pose a significant global threat.

The visit of one of the longest-serving Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) directors, Mr. Christopher Wray, to Nigeria last week signalled a new era in cooperation between Nigeria and the United States.

With the increase in the growth and sophistication of trans-border crimes and criminal networks in such crimes as cybercrimes, online fraud, trafficking in illicit drugs and money laundering and illicit transactions, government agencies across the world are working closer for solutions.

Wray’s historic visit to Nigeria, marked by his courtesy calls on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the National Security Adviser Malam Nuhu Ribadu, was a significant milestone. This was not only his first visit to Africa in his seven years as FBI director but also a testament to the growing importance of Nigeria in the global fight against trans-border crimes.

Equally significant was Wray’s inaugural visit to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), where he held a crucial meeting with the Chairman, Mr. Ola Olukoyede.

This meeting, the first of its kind, underscored the importance of international cooperation in combating trans-border crimes and the confidence in the EFCC’s renewed anti-corruption efforts under Olukoyede’s leadership.

There are perhaps a dozen anti-corruption agencies in Africa, notable among them the EFCC, the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Hawks; the Kenyan Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC); the Ghanian Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO); and the Sierra Leonean Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), among others. Wray, however, visited only two – the EFCC and the EACC.

Wray’s visit also aims to strengthen the partnership between the FBI and the EFCC. In his remark during the visit, Wray said: “We have had a relationship over the years, and this is a reflection of how stronger than ever we are looking forward to taking our partnership to higher and higher levels in tackling threats that affect the people of Nigeria and the people of the United States.”

In response, Olukoyede said in the fight against the “bad guys” and trans-border crimes, the Commission was “willing to continue and develop ideas that would be of mutual benefit to both agencies and ensure that the issue of cybercrime will take utmost priority in our scale of preference and also ensure that sextortion that has become a major challenge to us is taken very seriously.”

Wray’s visit takes on a special meaning in the context of statistics showing that apart from rising cybercrimes, illicit drugs and small arms, illicit financial flows also cost Africa around 88.6 billion dollars yearly.

Security analysts hope a deeper collaboration between the FBI and the EFCC will improve capacity building and intelligence sharing.

This genuine collaborate among the two agencies will mean that the Malcolm Bannisters of this world, the fictional character in Grisham’s book, will have a hard time in the future.(NANFeatures)
