Okitipupa (Ondo State), June 21, 2024 (NAN) Nigerian students have been urged to pay more attention to their passions, innate abilities and potentials than their mere academic certificates to survive the current economic challenges.
Director-General of Ondo State Pension Commission (OSPENCOM), Hon. Babatiunde Adefusi-Owate, stated this during a lecture, organised for graduating students of Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology (OAUSTECH), Okitipupa on Friday.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the lecture, held inside the multipurpose auditorium of the institution, had as its theme: “Think Beyond School.”
Adefusi-Owate said that being a graduate was supposed to be a mere stepping stone, maintaining that continuous skill enhancement and lifelong learning were crucial in the contemporary job market.
“There is a great value in becoming a specialist in one’s chosen domain.
“I urge graduates to establish distinct positions for themselves, pursue professional career advancement and concentrate on personal development, financial management and maintain a work-life equilibrium,” he said.
The director-general advised graduates to contemplate becoming entrepreneurs by registering their enterprises with Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) and operate within the legal boundaries.
“Graduates should refine their communication skills, participate in capacity-building workshops, seminars, training sessions and obtain pertinent competency certifications.
“They should also foster a growth-oriented mindset, embrace challenges and construct a robust professional network,” he said.
Another speaker, Dr Adeyemi Adeyemo, of OAUSTECH’s Department of Biological Science, advised students to pursue careers that aligned with their interests and capabilities.
He also implored them to adopt what he called the “shape” principle, involving recognising their unique talents, following their instincts, identifying their strengths, understanding themselves and acquiring valuable experiences.
The state Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Mr Segun Ayerin, congratulated the students and urged them to consider themselves fortunate to partake in such a transformative and defining programme.
Ayerin, represented by Mr Adegoju Owolabi, a Director in the ministry, urged the graduating students to explore and cultivate their unique gifts and talents as well as maintain a focus.
“Strive to be innovative problem solvers, conduct thorough research, think creatively, act decisively and be encouraged to make positive impacts on the world by offering your utmost,” Ayerim said.
Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor of OAUSTECH and Chief Host, Prof. Temi Ologunorisa, expressed gratitude to the students for their full participation in the programme.
Ologunorisa said that the purpose of the lecture was to equip them for life post-graduation, enabling them to have a clear sense of direction.
He appreciated the Olusegun Agagu University Leadership Academy (OAULA) Career Centre for coordinating the lecture.
The vice-chancellor also informed the graduating students that the centre would provide instruction and exposure to essential 21st century skills.
The acting Director of OAULA career centre, Dr Cecilia Oluwamodupe, also graciously acknowledged the vice-chancellor for his unwavering support for the academy.
Oluwamodupe said that the centre had gathered seasoned professionals and experts who had traversed similar paths to share their post-graduation experiences. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Curbing revenue wastage as panacea for Nigeria’s development
By Francis Onyeukwu, News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)
Many states and even the Federal Government often cite paucity of funds resulting from poor revenue base as the reason for their inability to provide developmental projects and pay minimum wage to workers.
This argument has persisted overtime, in spite of multiple revenue windows which abound for governments to explore to boost their revenue bases and face the task of governance frontally.
Revenue derived from natural oil and gas forms the bulk of the funds shared by the federal, states and Local Government Areas at monthly the Federal Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) meeting.
However, other revenue streams abound but are not well harnessed due to various reasons which are not far from ignorance, ineptitude and corruption.
The sources of revenue vested in the federal, state and local governments by law are much given the abundance of natural resources and mega population of Nigeria.
For the state and local government alone such revenue windows include, taxes on businesses and individuals, licensing of commercial activities, property rates and land use charges.
It also includes levies on markets and motor parks, permits and fees on construction and development, waste disposal, taxes on luxurious goods among others.
Economic analysts believe that with a population estimated at no fewer than 200 million people, Nigeria is a huge market for taxes, levies and transfers, among other Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) options.
But baseline question is: are these revenue windows properly tapped and managed by government?
Why is it that season and out of season, governments keep complaining of paucity of funds to address the challenges of governance?
Mr PaulChuks Umenduka, Anambra State Director, Woman and Family Advancement Initiative (WAFAI), an NGO, said the local government’s revenue drive had been hampered by the state governments who have literarily hijacked that tier of government.
“If the local government areas are allowed to operate as stipulated by law they will be alive to their responsibilities, including collection of taxes, levies among other revenues,’’ he said.
Umenduka says with the practice by which governors now superintend over the allocations due the council areas and what they spend the money on many activities will suffer.
According to him, under this practice, revenue windows will either lie fallow or given out to revenue contractors for political patronage thereby creating avenues for potential wastage gaps in the system.
Umenduka said worried by the losses incurred by the local government as a result of state governments interference in their finances, WAFAI recently urged the Federal Government take deliberate steps to make that them truly autonomous.
He said this should include giving the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) the powers to conduct elections for all the tiers of government.
He said if such amendments were effected in the constitution by the 10th National Assembly the IGR of local governments would return to impressive status.
According to him, local government revenue in Nigeria is an important component of the country’s economy, and is essential for providing basic services to communities.
He said while there were challenges to ensuring a stable and sustainable revenue base, local governments continue to explore new revenue opportunities and improve their service delivery.
Mr Dom Iwuoha also holds that a lot of revenues due government were lost through engagement of contractors to man their revenue windows.
Sharing a life experience, Iwuoha said he almost lost his life when he was employed as a revenue agent by a politician who had a revenue collection contract at Naze Industrial Market near Owerri.
“As one of the agents, our duty was to collect tolls from vehicles that came into the market and at later we checked the daily collections and delivered the money to our principal.
“I was oblivious of the usual practice by the old workers that after daily collections, they keep back almost 90 per cent of the money they made and hand over about 10 per cent to the owner of the revenue window as what they made.
“When after the close of work that fateful day, we calculated the monies we realised and the `boys` said how much we are to pay into our principal I told them it was unfair for us to short-change him.
“Unknown to me that my objection irked the old workers, they said okay, let us suspend the account for that day and do it at the end of the week.
“When we arrived for work the next day, I noticed a lot of usual movements and discussions amongst the old workers. About the closing hours, some rough looking boys started milling round the place’’, he said.
He said he escaped being lynched by touts hired by his colleagues because he suggested that they fully account for the money they collected.
Besides the Iwuoha experience, similar situation abound in many revenue windows outsourced to individuals in parts of the country.
In many advanced economies grassroots government are take measures such technology to streamline collection processes.
Mr Michael Amaechi is an agent to one of the third party insurance outfits operating in one of the states in the South-East geo-political zone.
He has been in the job for about 20 years before he became `chairman` as the leaders are called in their circles, three years ago.
Amaechi said, before he joined the group, he was a commercial bus driver.
“The third party insurance job is a money spinning job. But you cannot eat alone if you must last long in the business.
“At the end of the month, you must make returns to key partners including some top officials of ministry of finance and strategic security personnel that play roles in the business.
“If you can keep to the rules, what you take home regularly will be substantial to make you rich at a very short time,” he said.
He said the practice of outsourcing third party insurance was a source revenue leakage and unnecessary waste of IGR that needed to be addressed.
Federal Capital Territory, (FCT) satellite towns daily disposal household refuse are handled by scavengers popularly called “baba bola’, otherwise a major revenue source for local governments.
For Mrs Ese Williams, Head Business Desk, News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Abuja curbing wastages from revenue windows is a serious one and calls for concern by government.
Williams faulted taxes collection mechanisms, adding that only government and company employees pay taxes because they were deducted from the salaries.
She insists that government must rejig the method of revenue generation so as to strengthen stabilise the economy.
Williams said that Nigeria with its jumbo population and abundant natural resources ought not to operate in lack if its resources were properly managed.
“I pay more than N40, 000 monthly as tax monthly and yet most business owners making more monies than civil servants do not pay tax and this is unfair to the workers’’ she said.
Williams regretted that in spite of the burden of living with heavy tax workers were still responsible for providing their own security, water and others that the government was supposed to provide for them.
“Government should sanitise the revenue windows by engaging institutions with the right digital technology for revenue collections.
“If this is done, every taxable institutions and individuals including the politicians and business owners will be paying taxes and a whole lot of revenue will be available government to face the task of governance’’ she said.
She insists that what is currently going on, that giving out revenue windows to relatives and political friends will continue to rob the nation of huge IGR thereby slowing the paces of development in the country.
“I remember that in the Federal Capital Territory sometime in the recent past, there was reported case of some revenue agents who printed their own receipts outside the official one they were given,’’ she said.
Nigeria is a huge market for income generation. However, the safety net to minimise wastage through corruption is not tight enough.
Governments should sanitise their revenue generation instruments for optimal performance and drastic drop in leakages.
Only by so doing would they meet the aspirations of the people, including workers who are yearning for an upward review of their salaries. (NANFeatures)

Hungarian PM sees new EU leadership as ‘Coalition for war and migration’
Coalition
Budapest, June 21, 2024 (dpa/NAN) Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has described the emerging new leadership of the European Union, under a potential second term for Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, as a “coalition for war and migration.”
In an interview with a Hungarian state broadcaster on Friday, Orbán stated that the “increasingly left-wing” coalition of conservatives, social democrats, and liberals, who hold a majority in the new European Parliament, have already reached an agreement on this matter.
At an informal meeting of EU leaders in Brussels on Monday, no agreement had yet been reached on filling the EU’s top jobs after the European elections on June 9.
However, it was a “match that has already been whistled,” said Orbán.
“A warmongering, anti-business, and pro-migration coalition has emerged in the EU,” he continued.
As the leader of the conservative European People’s Party (EPP), the party with the most votes in the European Parliament, the German Manfred Weber had played “the role of Beelzebub” – a demon or devil – in forging this coalition.
Weber is “an old enemy and evildoer of Hungary” and von der Leyen is “just a little altar girl” to him, Orbán said.
The coalition of “Weberians” would execute the so-called “Soros plan,” Orbán continued.
According to this plan, the Hungarian-born US billionaire and philanthropist George Soros is attempting to flood Europe with migrants to rob European nations of their Christian and national identity.
“A population exchange is taking place in Europe, the white, Christian, tradition-conscious – let’s say European – person is becoming fewer, the number of imported migrants is increasing,” Orbán continued.
The allegation of an – unverifiable – “Soros plan” and the complaint about an alleged “population exchange” are part of the conspiracy narratives propagated by right-wing extremists.
The radio interview with Orbán was recorded in Berlin.

UniAbuja
By Femi Ogunshola
Abuja, June 21, 2024 (NAN) The House of Representatives Committee on University Education has visited the University of Abuja (UniAbuja), urging the institution’s Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to call off its ongoing strike.
The Chairman of the committee, Abubakar Fulata, in an interview with newsmen shortly after Friday’s visit in Abuja said the appeal became necessary to prevent destabilising the academic calendar.
The lawmaker said the visit aligned with the constitutional provisions empowering legislators to carry out oversight functions over Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to ensure compliance with the Appropriation Act.
He called on the institution’s management to judiciously utilise what was provided in line with the 2024 Appropriation Act.
He also advised them to seek additional ways to fund the university instead of relying almost absolutely on the government.
In his remarks, the outgoing Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Abdul-Rasheed Na’Allah, commended the lawmakers for their visit and for intervening in the dispute between the school management and ASUU.
He lauded the committee for its efforts that resulted in the Federal Government removing universities from the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).
“The removal of universities from IPPIS helped us from going to the Head of Service of the Federation and several MDAs before carrying out our functions like salary payment, appointments, and promotion among others,” he said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

DSS, others warn on dangers of drug abuse
Drugs
By Ijendu Iheaka
Umuahia, June 21, 2024 (NAN) The Abia Director, Directorate of State Services (DSS), Salami Ajege, has warned youths to desist from drug abuse because of its harmful effects on lives and society.
Ajege issued the warning at a seminar organised in Umuahia as part of the efforts to check drug abuse among Abia youths.
He said that the usual alibi by suspects that they committed crimes under drug influences would not set them free.
The seminar organised by a concerned resident, Mr Chimezirim Nnubia, had as its theme, the “Prevalence of drug abuse and its consequential threat to the society”.
The state DSS boss, represented by an officer in the agency, Ikechukwu Obasi, said that drugs lead people to different crimes.
He said that although most crimes by youths were comitted under drug influence, “such claims would not set them free from blame and punishment”.
He, therefore, urged the youths to run from drug abuse to save the future of Nigeria, given that they constitute the country’s future workforce.
Ajege regretted that only a few ladies attended the seminar and called for more female participation in such seminars, considering that women also indulge in drugs.
In a speech, the organiser said that it had become urgent to stop the rampant tendency among the youths to abuse drugs.
Nnubia said that most of the drugs being abused were not only dangerous to their health but could result in their death hence the need to stop them before it is late.
He also said that the dire consequences of drug abuse should make everyone to join the fight against the phenomenon.
The Deputy State Commander, Nigerian Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Binta Anomoris, told the participants to avoid drug abuse at all cost.
“It is alarming that youths sent to school can no longer go to school and many become useless and some even die from drug abuse.
“Curiosity, peer pressure and other reasons make youths to take drugs but there is no excuse for any youth to take to drug abuse.
“Drugs drag you down in life. It makes everyone in the house and community to be afraid of the drug abuser,” Anomoris said.
She warned that they can never control drugs but that drugs will always control them hence the need to shun the act.
The Deputy Director, Programmes, National Orientation Agency, Abia Office, Ndubuisi Anozie, said that drugs had ruined many lives of prospective successful people.
Anozie said that avoiding drugs means preserving their lives and their future.
He admonished them to think about handing over to their children a drug-free society. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Lagos PDP state exco ratifies Adewale’s suspension, party chieftain kicks
Suspension
By Adeyemi Adeleye
Lagos, June 21, 2024 (NAN) The Lagos State Executive Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has ratified the indefinite suspension of a former State Chairman of the party, Chief Segun Adewale (aka Aeroland).
The party ,in a letter dated June 19 and signed by the State Secretary, Mr Soji Orioye, said the resolution was taken at the party’s executive meeting on Wednesday .
Orioye said the committee made the resolution upon receipt of letters of suspension of Adewale from his ward and local government area( Alimosho Local Government Area )and after due diligence.
He said Adewale’s ward and local government area notified the state executive committee of the party about his suspension in a letter dated June 12.
Orioye said that his suspension followed alleged acts of misconduct, including breach of the party’s constitution, diversion of election funds, and anti-party activities .
“That State Executive Committee of the Party notes with regrets that the body is already in receipt of several petitions against the same Mr Segun Adewale wherein he was alleged to have taken some prominent leaders of the party to court.
“This, he did, without exploring the conflict resolution mechanism of the party ,which action ordinarily amounts to a fundamental breach of the party’s constitution.
“The state exco further takes judicial notice of Mr Adewale’s disdain and disrespect for the Constitution of the Party, as well as all other constituted organs of the party.
“This he did, using the Nigerian Police to arrest and harass some prominent party leaders and the principal officers of Alimosho Local Government Exco- his own local government,” Orioye said.
He said that the party’s State Working Committee was mindful of its constitutional responsibilities to the party.
According to him, the committee in strict compliance with the principle of fair hearing as guaranteed in the Constitution of Nigeria and as contained in Section 57 (5) ofthe Constitution of our great Party (2017 amended version), gave Adewale an opportunity to defend himself.
He said that this was through a letter of invitation, dated June 12 ,to a fact- finding meeting.
Orioye said that Adewale shunned the invitation and failed to take advantage of the window of opportunity to defend himself.
“That failure to appear personally or through a counsel before a panel of enquiry without any legal excuse or any formal apologies to attend the meeting and defend himself over such heinous allegations becomes an undefended case.
“There is therefore, a natural presumption of guilt to the levelled allegations ,hence his decision not to honour the invitation.
“That in order to instil discipline, maintain orderliness as well as to defend, uphold and advance the supremacy of the constitution of our great Party- PDP, the State Executive Committee of the party in Lagos State after an extensive deliberation on the matter, had no other option but to ratify the suspension of Mr Adewale as carried out and passed from his ward and local government.
“That accordingly, Mr Segun Adewale (alias Aeroland) is hereby suspended from our great party – Lagos State PDP in accordance with section 57, Subsection 3 and Section 58, subsection (A), (B), (D), (I) and (L) of our Party’s Constitution (2017 Amended Version)”he said.
Confirming the letter in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the Lagos State PDP Chairman, Mr Philip Aivoji, said that the decision to suspend former state chairman was jointly taken by state exco.
“it was the decision of the entire exco, ” Aivoji told NAN on telephone.
Reacting, Adewale said that the party’s constitution only allowed suspension of any party member or leader from the ward ,claiming he had not been suspended by his ward for any alleged act of misconduct.
“It is unfortunate that leaders and exco that are supposed to be suspended from the party for working against the PDP in the 2023 general elections are the ones suspending me that stayed to defend the party and its votes.
“I am still in the party, I am still the South West ex-officio of the party, representing Lagos in the zone and the national body has not removed me.
“The national body is even asking me and begging me to stay.
“The premise on which the state exco is talking of suspension is faulty because the constitution states that I must be suspended from my ward and there is nothing like suspension from my ward,” he said.
Adewale said that instead of publishing the report of his suspension in the media for sensationalism, the state executive should proceed to the zonal level and then the national level, to actualise their plan.
“If the suspension is real and not for sensationalism or propaganda, the letter should be sent to South West zone of the party and the national leadership in Abuja.
“They should take the suspension letter to Abuja now. They should notify the national body of PDP and Southwest Zonal exco of the party, not the press. We are waiting for the letter.
“They can suspend but it is the national body that will ratify it,” he said.
He alleged that the former PDP National Deputy Chairman and life Board of Trustees member, Chief Olabode George had been fingered in “all the drama of my suspension”.
“The reason for the suspension is because I took Bode George up and keep challenging him for always trading away the party every four years on the eve of elections,” Adewale said.
He said that he didn’t show up at the state executive disciplinary committee when invited because its membership were full of those that worked against the party in the last elections.
“He that comes to equity must come with clean hands. They are the ones we are supposed to be suspended because they worked against the party,” Adewale said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
