New Road Construction in Murama Village to Improve Transportation for Residents

Residents of Murama Village in Nyagatare District are expressing optimism about a new road construction project that promises to significantly improve transportation in their community. The project, which involves building a paved road, is expected to address long-standing mobility challenges, particularly for those using assistive devices and bicycles on the previously difficult terrain.

The community members, including individuals with specific mobility needs, report that the development marks a significant step forward in local infrastructure. They highlight how the poor condition of the former road created numerous obstacles for daily travel.

Among the anticipated benefits is easier access to essential services in Nyagatare town, where many residents frequently need to visit banks, healthcare facilities, and other important destinations.

Habimana Twaibu, a local resident, shared his perspective: “The challenges we faced included a bad road full of potholes and rough patches. For someone using a bicycle, especially a person with disabilities, it was very difficult and time-consuming. The bicycles would also break down frequently. Even for those using motorcycle taxis, the poor road conditions made travel uncomfortable and potentially hazardous.”

He continued: “Having this road constructed now is a blessing for us. We’re getting roads that will facilitate our travel, and we’re told it will be paved, making movement much easier. Previously, someone might need to go to the bank but if it rained, they couldn’t go because the road became impassable, thus disrupting their plans. This road provides a solution to that problem.”

Beyond facilitating transportation, residents believe the new road will contribute to economic opportunities in the area.

Kanobana Julien added: “This road has caused our village to develop, with more people starting to come here for various activities. Our homes have increased in value. Besides renting them out, we will also have projects we can undertake despite physical limitations. We appreciate that the leadership recognizes us and brings development like this.”

District authorities confirmed that the Murama village road project was included in last year’s development plans, responding to strong community demand and identified needs.

Hategekimana Fred, the Executive Secretary of Nyagatare District, stated: “This village, which hosts residents with specific backgrounds, is on the outskirts of Nyagatare town and they requested a paved road connecting them to the town. We found this to be necessary.”

He further noted that the remaining focus is on helping residents prepare to maximize the road’s potential for productivity, which will help improve their living standards and contribute to overall community development.
