At Algerian Production Fair, President Tebboune Addresses Market Practices and State Support

The President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, addressed the topic of market practices concerning subsidized food products during a public event. He emphasized the state’s commitment to ensuring fair market conditions.

The Head of State spoke on Thursday, December 18, in Algiers on the occasion of the inauguration of the Algerian Production Fair at the Safex exhibition center. At the stand of the public dairy group Giplait, Abdelmadjid Tebboune discussed operational challenges related to the distribution of subsidized goods.

The President explained that to address distribution issues, the state has invested significantly in constructing a large processing plant in Algiers. The goal is to inject an additional million liters daily to help stabilize the market.

He stated that current market disruptions are not due to a shortage but are rather a result of inefficient distribution channels. He outlined a scenario where a portion of subsidized goods might be sold locally, while the remainder could be diverted to other markets.

The President affirmed that relevant authorities would oversee market regulations to ensure compliance. He stressed the importance of lawful commercial practices concerning essential subsidized goods.

At the Giplait enterprise, he encouraged the company to fulfill its role in the distribution network, with the state providing necessary support.

“You are more than a commercial company; you have a public service mission. I am not asking you to operate at a loss, but you must organize yourselves… You must play a role. Where you see a shortage, you supply. We are here to compensate where needed,” he stated.

According to explanations provided by the manager of Giplait, the group’s 16 subsidiaries have a production capacity of 7 million liters of milk per day, covering 52% of national demand.
