The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has announced the deployment of an updated national highway patrol unit. This initiative aims to enhance road safety and traffic management during the busy holiday travel period and beyond.
The launch comes as many motorists prepare for travel ahead of the Christmas and New Year holidays, a time when road traffic typically increases significantly.
Police Commissioner-General Stephen Mutamba formally launched the updated ZRP National Highway Patrol team. The unit will utilize new, high-capacity vehicles to monitor major roads throughout the festive season and into the future.
ZRP national spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, stated that officers in this unit will be equipped with body-worn cameras as part of a broader electronic traffic management system.
Commissioner Nyathi also encouraged the public to report observed instances of dangerous or reckless driving to the highway patrol team for appropriate response. “The ZRP urges the public to report any unruly and dangerous driving conduct on the roads by motorists to the team for swift action,” said Nyathi.
Road safety authorities often note that common factors in traffic incidents can include speeding, distracted driving, and vehicle condition. The deployment of this patrol unit is part of ongoing efforts to promote safer driving practices and improve compliance with traffic regulations.
